From the summit of the Mackinnon Pass,walkers on the famed Milford Track get spectacular views of glacial valleys, before descending to Milford Sound dominated by distinctive Mitre Peak.
 

 

 
Mount Ruapehu is the central feature of the North Island plateau and the winter slopes are a mecca for skiers.
Sheep farms and vineyards flourish at the foot of the aptly named Remarkables.
But this mountain issues a regular reminder that it is far from dormant.

                    Rotorua is the heart of an intensive thermal area and is the focus of many Maori legends.
